What Is The Difference Between Keto And Paleo

How Is The Paleo Diet Different Than Keto

What’s the Difference Between Keto and Paleo?

The biggest difference is in the food selection and the macronutrient split that each diet recommends. Its not exactly a low-carbodhydrate diet, but does have some fairly strict guidelines for carb intake. While there is no set diet macro nutrient ratio that the paleo diet focuses on, researchers have noted that most dieters following the paleo protocol end up with similar macronutrient splits. This quote nicely sums that up.

On average, the authors estimate the following ratio of macronutrients: 35% energy from fats, 35% from carbohydrates, and 30% from protein

Paleolithic DietEffect on the Health Status and Performance of Athletes?

This article from Harvard, shows us the main differences in macro nutrient ratios between paleo and keto. For the keto diet, you will be eating 70-80% of your total calories from fat. This leaves you with only 5-10% of calories from carbs, and 10-20% from protein. Keto is a true low-carb diet.

Moreover, the keto diet allows food like dairy where as paleo does not. Ketogenic diets also allow things like sugar free sweeteners and paleo doesnt. Lastly, food like starchy vegetables and fruit are allowed when following paleo, however, since they contain carbs they wont be allowed on keto. In the next section you can see a quick list of the different types of food allowed on each type of diet.

Keto Diet Vs Paleo Diet: Similarities

Now that we have a basic understanding of both of these diets, lets look at how they are similar. The following are both found within the Keto diet and the Paleo diet:

  • Elimination of Grains
  • Plenty of non-starchy vegetables and leafy greens

While these two diets have plenty in common, they actually have more differences than similarities.

Which Diet Plan Is Healthier: Keto Or Paleo

First: a disclaimer. Ive always said that I dont think either one will be the diet to solve obesity, says McDaniel. While she doesnt endorse either for clients in her private practice, she says that paleo wins out over keto. Its easier to follow, and you dont need to keep your body in a state of ketosis, she says. As an article on the challenges of the keto diet in Popular Science explains, its difficult for adults to reach a true state of deep ketosis. Not to mention, as your body adjusts to being in ketosis, youll experience unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, headache, fatigue, and constipation a phenomenon folks call the keto flu.

McDaniel also says that on paleo, theres more of an emphasis on a healthy lifestyle, including exercise , sleep, and stress reduction, all things that are healthy to focus on.

Both May Be Effective For Weight Loss

One of the primary reasons for the popularity of keto and paleo diets is the notion that they will promote weight loss.

Unfortunately, there is limited research available for how effective these diets are for sustained, long-term weight loss. However, some short-term research is promising.

A small study of postmenopausal, obese women following the paleo diet showed a 9% weight loss after six months and a 10.6% loss at 12 months. No additional significant change in weight was seen at the 24-month mark .

One review of research on low-carb, high-fat diets, such as the ketogenic diet, indicated that short-term weight loss can occur when switching to this style of eating .

This may have been because a high intake of fat usually leads to a decrease in appetite and fewer overall calories consumed. It may also be that the process of ketosis is leading to more efficient elimination of the bodys fat stores. The exact reason is still unclear.

Ultimately, more research is needed to determine a clear causal relationship .

The keto and paleo diets share a lot of similar food restrictions and rules, though often for different reasons.

Can The Keto Diet And Paleo Diet Be Combined

Is The Keto Diet Gluten Free

Grain free or keto breads may not mean gluten free. You do have to read labels if youre avoiding gluten.

Usually the answer is yes, but you have to read labels. Typically the keto diet is gluten free as there are supposedly no grains allowed. Dont make this blanket assumption.

There are processed keto products being sold right now on line and in stores that qualify as keto friendly because of their low carb count, but they still contain wheat and or gluten. I have seen a low-carb bread at Aldis that contains wheat protein. I ordered keto cookies on-line that also contain a wheat protein. Soy sauce contains gluten, but tamari coconut aminos do not. You must read labels if you are striving for keto products that are gluten free.

Cons Of The Paleo Diet

Like most diets, there are some things you should watch out for when trying the paleo diet.

High cost. Buying whole foods can be much costlier than their processed counterparts that have been frozen or canned.

Nutrient deficiencies. Cutting out all grains and legumes leaves you without enough B vitamins like thiamine, folate, niacin, and riboflavin. You might be most at risk for not getting enough calcium or vitamin D.

High meat intake. The paleo diet requires you to eat more meat. Studies have linked eating more red meat to health risks. These risks include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and an increased risk of death.

What To Consider When Choosing Between Paleo And Keto Diets

Paleo vs Keto Diets: Whats the difference?

When deciding on the best diet for you, think about whats sustainable. You should talk to your doctor or nutritionist about the right diet plan for you.

The paleo diet can be healthy by getting you to focus on the current processed foods youre eating. However, its a starting point. Eating a lot of fatty meats can have the opposite effect.

If the keto diet interests you more, make sure youre keeping your doctor in the loop. You should focus on a healthy balance of the foods available to you.

What Is The Paleo Or Caveman Diet Approach

People who follow paleo opt for foods that some say Paleolithic-era people ate, says Amy Kubal, RDN, a registered dietitian specializing in the paleo diet in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Once eaten in a hunter-gatherer society, a paleo menu consists of very simple foods like meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and roots and tubers, she says. On the other hand, you do not eat legumes, grains, most dairy, and refined sugar. Over time, the diet has become less strict, and some groups have expanded it to include foods like honey, maple syrup, or grass-fed butter.

When you focus on whole foods, youre definitely getting more nutrients, but the real benefit is the processed foods youre cutting out something that likely helps you cut calories. As long as this is well planned, you will likely lose weight, says Kubal. Advocates for paleo also say that by adhering to the diet, you can avoid modern diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease, explains U.S. News & World Report, which employs a team of experts to analyze popular diets. That said, the studies that analyze paleos cardiovascular or diabetes-prevention benefits are extremely small. More research is needed to verify the diets claims.

Three Major Differences Between The Ketogenic And Paleo Diets

While there are many similarities between the two protocols, keto is more than just “modified paleo.”

When we talk to people about the ketogenic diet and lifestyle, one of the questions most frequently asked is, “Is that like paleo?” A typical response is something along the lines of, “It’s like a modified paleo,” and many will leave it there. However, we think it’s important for you to be able to identify the differences between the two, not because one is inherently better than the other, but because everyone should be aware of their options. While there are many similarities between paleo and keto, there are at least three major differences.

Paleo isn’t necessarily low carb

Paleo isn’t necessarily high fat

Even though the paleo and ketogenic protocols diverge in some fairly substantial ways, it must be noted that the paleo community has been an absolute powerhouse of a movement, bringing massive amounts of attention and awareness to ancestral eating. For that, we applaud them! While we have some areas in which our advocacy diverges, paleo and ketogenic protocols do have one major similarity: We each advocate for eating whole, nutrient-dense foods in their most natural forms. Whichever eating lifestyle you choose, keeping your food very clean and natural is the first step towards health and food freedom.

Does Paleo Or Keto Have Worse Side Effects

It’s common to feel lethargic as your body adjusts to the low-carb Paleo Diet. However, your energy levels will typically be restored within a few weeks.

Additionally, while the paleo diet has plenty of protein and fiber, it is sorely lacking in calcium and vitamin D, mainly because of the omission of dairy products, Roger Adams, Ph.D., founder of Eat Right Fitness, previously explained to Men’s Health.

Over time, this could weaken your bones and immune system, which makes it important to eat plenty of calcium-rich foods like broccoli and dark leafy greens.

The extremely low level of carbs on the Keto Diet can cause what’s known as the keto flu, which causes headaches, nausea, muscle cramping, and fatigue. Like the Paleo Diet, these unpleasant side effects generally subside after a few weeks. Drinking plenty of water and getting a full night’s sleep should help.

As with paleo, doing keto for more than a few weeks could lead to nutrient deficiencies according to Andy Yurechko, MS, RD, of Augusta University Medical Center in Georgia .

He says lack of fiber is the biggest concern for keto fanatics, who may experience constipation. But it’s possible to get fiber by eating lower-carb vegetables like broccoli and chia seeds.

Both diets come with some unpleasant side effects, but Yurechko doesn’t advise sacrificing fiber to try keto in the long run.

What Is The Paleolithic Diet

There is limited evidence for the exact diet of our Paleolithic ancestors. It greatly varied depending on geography and food availability, so the paleo diet is only a modern interpretation of their eating pattern that is adapted to present-day lifestyles, with an overlay of current beliefs.

However, “just because they ate a certain way doesn’t mean it is optimal for modern-day humans,” says Ayana Davis, MS, registered dietitian nutritionist at UCSF Cancer Center. Here are the main principles of the paleo diet:

  • Going back to our prehistoric ancestors’ diet: The paleo diet encourages the consumption of foods that can be obtained through hunting, gathering, and fishing. This includes fruits, vegetables, organ meat and fatty cuts, fish, nuts, and seeds.
  • Limiting food staples from agricultural practices: Our ancestors relied on simple stone tools, so they didn’t grow food and raise livestock yet. Therefore, foods such as dairy products, legumes, and grains, must be kept to a minimum.
  • Rejecting modern-day processed foods: Modern food systems and production techniques that led to the increase of processed, refined, and sodium-heavy foods are thought to cause the rise of chronic illnesses and various diseases. Only lean meat from grass-fed animals is allowed, and canned meat, bacon, hotdogs, and processed oils are restricted.

However, some people who practice the paleo diet may choose to limit carbs if that’s part of their individual nutrition goals.

Sleep More And Better

Paleo recommends making sure youre getting enough good quality rest each night.

Keto doesnt make any recommendations regarding sleep, although some keto dieters do report experiencing interesting changes to their sleep cycles.

Good sleep is vital for your health: a study summarized the effects of sleep deprivation, which include high blood pressure, craving for comfort foods, inflammation, and a depressed mood.

There are certain sleep habits you can develop to make sure your body gets the rest it needs.

Try making sure you get bright light every morning, using blackout curtains, avoiding blue light in the evening, sleeping in cooler temperatures and developing a relaxing evening routine.

No matter which diet you choose, eating better can often help you sleep better too. The reverse is also true: better sleep means youll make healthier food choices and find it easier to stick to the diet you choose.
