Is Gluten Free Flour Keto

Is There A No Carb Flour

Gluten Free Keto Friendly Almond Flour Bread using Blanched Almond Flour

Unfortunately, most low carb flours are made from nuts and seeds. And all nuts and seeds contain some carbs. Thats why the keto flours in this list are low carb rather than no-carb. Theres a full roundup of the net carbs in nuts and seeds here.

However, konjac flour or glucomannan is technically a no carb flour. Its essentially all fiber, which doesnt count towards your daily carb intake. In other words, it has no net carbs!

But it doesnt behave the same way as almond flour or regular flour. So when youre using it in your baking, youll have to combine it with other low carb flours to get the results you want.

Is Keto Gluten Free Heres The Truth

  • Pin2

Celiac disease is a real headache to manage because youll need to avoid many of your favorite foods. But is keto gluten free?

Not necessarily.

This post will go through everything you need to know about keto and gluten-free diets. Ill discuss if all keto products are gluten-free, what you should look out for and if keto helps manage celiac disease.

Is Keto Gluten Free

Keto and gluten-free are quite similar, but they arent the same.

Keto focuses on removing all carbs while increasing fat intake to trigger ketosis. During ketosis, our bodies use ketones for fuel instead of glucose. This offers health benefits like:

  • Weight loss
  • Lower blood sugar and insulin levels
  • Reduced risk of developing chronic conditions like diabetes

But some keto products, especially bread and baked goods, sometimes use gluten as a stabilizer. So when eating these bread, doughnuts, and cakes, you wont knock yourself out of ketosis, but youre still consuming gluten which upsets your stomach.

The opposite is also true. Just because a food is gluten-free doesnt mean its healthy. Quinoa, rice, oat and buckwheat are all fine on a gluten-free diet. But they have a GI score of over 50, meaning they spike your blood sugar and insulin as high as table sugar.

Almond Flour: The All

Almond flour is one of the best grain-free alternatives to regular flour. Its a low-carb flour staple for everyone following a ketogenic diet .

A 1/4 cup of almond flour contains 160 calories, 14 grams of fat, 6 grams of protein, and just 2 grams of net carbs, making it one of the best keto flour alternatives. Due to its high-fat content, and lack of gluten, you may need additional eggs or baking powder to give your baked goods more structure.

The typical almond flour is made from almonds that are blanched and ground into a fine flour. It tends to add a lightly sweet flavor and a moist texture to baked goods, making it ideal for low-carb cakes, cookies, bread, and pie crusts.

Almond flour is available in supermarkets and grocery stores, but you can find it for the lowest price when you buy it in bulk online. Make sure you purchase the finest blanched almond flour that has no darker specks of skin. The finer the grind of the almond flour, the finer the consistency of your baked goods and the easier it will be for your food to rise.

With that being said, there is a place for more coarsely ground almonds as well. Almond meals, for example, are often less expensive and are still useful in things that dont require a fine texture, such as muffins and cookies.

Walnut Meal And Other Nut Flours

Best Keto Gluten Free Bread

You can grind almost any nut to obtain a flour-like consistency and use it to reduce the carb content of your recipes. Walnut meal, for example, can be used in many recipes that call for almond flour. Other nut flours that you can experiment with are hazelnut meal, pecan meal, macadamia nut meal, and pistachio meal. Each one will provide your baked goods with a unique flavor, so choose wisely.

An important caveat, however, is that it is much harder to find recipes using these nut flours. For this reason, youll have to go through a lot of trial and error to find out which nut meal works best for the food that you are preparing.

How To Store Walnut Meal and Other Nut Flours Properly:

Store them in the same way that you would for almond flour and almond meal. Put it in an airtight bag or container, and keep it in the fridge or freezer between uses.

Recommended Nut Flour Products?

  • Although you can find some specialty nut flours, it is best to buy whole nuts and process them into fine flour or meal on your own.

A Delicious Recipe That Uses Walnut Meal:

This recipe works well with either chopped walnuts or coarse walnut meal. The walnuts add another flavor and texture dimension to the salmon that almonds simply cant provide.

What Not To Do With Keto Flours

  • Dont Swap Keto Flours you cannot replace one sort of keto flour with another one with the same ratio.
  • Dont Use like All-purpose Flour. Unfortunately, you cannot just swap one cup of all-purpose flour with one cup of keto flour to make a cake.
  • Dont Make them at home. I know it is tempting to grind almonds in a blender to try and make homemade almond flour, but this will not be ideal. Homemade almond flour is always much coarser than its store-bought equivalent, even if you have used blanched almonds.

So as a keto baking beginner, do not try to adapt recipes or change things. Start by following a well-tested keto baking recipe, using the correct ingredients to avoid disappointment.

Why Cant I Just Use Regular Flour On Keto

The short answer is its too high in carbohydrates!

You need to keep your carb intake under 25g per day on a Keto diet. Its vital for making sure your body stays in nutritional ketosis. And since regular flour contains lots of carbohydrates, youll just be making things harder for yourself.

Regular flour also contains gluten, which is problematic.

Gluten has been proven to cause inflammation and digestive issues. Yes, even in folks who arent celiac! And non-celiac gluten sensitivity has also been linked to various chronic health conditions, too. So avoiding gluten is another good reason to stay away from regular flour!

A Keto Diet Focuses On Consuming Only High

Caption: 04/11/2019 – Dieting, a word commonly used by people who are in the process of consuming food in a regulated and monitored manner. We normally equate someone who is dieting to someone who wants to lose weight and restricts their food intake to achieve a desired outcome, for example to prevent certain diseases or deal with obesity.

For many reasons, the purpose of dieting has evolved. Currently there are many popular diet plans available, such as the gluten-free diet, keto diet, paleo diet and detox diet. But today we are only going to discuss the difference between two more widely used diets, which are the gluten-free and keto diets.

How I Run My Grain Free Sugar Free Bakery

Gluten Free Keto Friendly Almond Flour Bread

I do not use any grains or sugar whatsoever. However, I cannot call my bakery gluten free, because there could be cross contamination.

There are times my kitchen cooks pasta or bread products that are not gluten free. These are not done at the same time and my flours are kept in separate places.

I still can say that my baked goods are wheat free, grain free and sugar free. Since I dont have a 100 percent gluten free dedicated kitchen, nor do some of the products I add, I cannot officially label my products gluten free. Some products may say on their label made in an environment that is not officially gluten free.

You will notice that many restaurants now choose to say wheat free instead of gluten free on their menus, because they cannot guarantee that there is no cross contamination.

The Spinach Tiger Bakery is based in Franklin, TN and delivers to Nashville on Saturdays.

Baking Keto Is Now A Lot Easier

If youre following a keto diet, baking isnt exactly easy. Sticking to the low-carb guidelines of the diet means that most traditional baked goods arent within reach. But does that mean keto baking is impossible?

Not anymore! We want everyone to enjoy baking , so our Innovation Team recently went to work developing a keto-friendly, low-carb flour that would bake like regular all-purpose flour. It took a lot of time, research, testing, and baking to get there, but were pleased to share a product that finally makes keto and low-carb baking easy: Keto Wheat Flour.

What is Keto Wheat Flour?

Keto Wheat Flour might sound like an oxymoron, but it actually exists! The key is that this flour is low in carbs and high in fiber so while many people on a keto diet dont eat wheat because of the high carb content, its entirely possible to eat wheat-based products as long as the net carb total remains low.

This flour also ranks low on the glycemic index, with an average value of 31. It also has a low glycemic load, at just 1 per serving. Similar to glycemic index values, glycemic load is useful for helping people identify which types and amounts of foods will produce relatively lower blood glucose responses after consumption. Glycemic load values of 10 or less are considered low.

Heres why were excited about Keto Wheat Flour:

Konjac Flour Is This The New Keto Flour

What is Konjac Flour or Glucomannan?

Konjac flour is made from the root of the Konjac plant, which is native to China. Youll also see it called glucomannan.

The high fiber content of Konjac makes it great for your gut health. Adding Konjac to your diet has been proven to decrease constipation and improve your gut bacteria.

Konjac Flour Has Zero Net Carbs!

Because Konjac flour is almost all fiber, it doesnt have ANY net carbs.

Your body cant digest fiber, so it passes through your digestive system without being absorbed by your body. And thats why fiber doesnt count as part of your daily net carb intake.

Where to buy konjac flour or glucomannan powder?

The best place to look for Konjac flour is online. And the brand we recommend using is NOW Glucomannan Pure Powder.

Is The Paleo Diet Healthy

Healthy is a subjective word. It can be extremely healthy if you dont overdo on the sugary fruit, nuts, nut products and the sweeteners.

If you have existed on processed foods most of your life, and you are making a switch, the paleo diet can be a game changer and bring abut positive health changes.

However, if you overdo the honey and maple syrup, you are still over-doing carbs and sugar. This can take your diet in an unhealthy direction.

Strictly speaking, the Paleo diet is gluten free, but is not necessarily keto friendly because high sugar content in most fruits, maple syrup, honey and higher carb vegetables are part of the Paleo lifestyle. However, you could follow a keto/paleo type plan by avoiding those foods, but adhering to grass fed, beef and keeping your net carbs to around 20.

My favorite Paleo meatballs are here.

What Does Lupin Flour Taste Like

Perfect gluten

People say Lupin Flour has a nutty and somewhat neutral taste. However, certain varieties are known to be a little bitter. In order to minimize any bitterness, people usually mix lupin with other keto-friendly flours such as Almond or Coconut flour. Lupin Flour can also be mixed with some of your favorite sweeteners like Erythritol, Stevia or Monk Fruit.

Can I Eat Keto Bars And Low

You may ask yourself, why would you want to make homemade low-carb baking when you can just buy it instead? Because many low-carb products have been found to contain ingredients that are actually high-carb in disguise.

Despite these products being sold as low carb or keto, they often tend to be highly processed and may contain wheat, gluten, and corn. They often contain certain sugar alcohols that are not keto-friendly and will raise your blood sugar, despite being low-carb.

By making your own low-carb baked goods, you can control exactly what goes in . You can control the sweeteners and the carb value so that you ensure you stay within the daily carb limit of your keto diet.

How Does Lupin Flour Compare To Other Keto Flours

There are two kinds of flours that are mainly used on the keto diet: nut flours and coconut flour, in addition to things like psyllium and flaxseed that act as binders and thickeners. Theyre low in carbs, high in nutrients, and work as perfect substitutions for their high carb counterparts. Here are the specs on keto flour alternatives:

What Is The Difference Between Keto Paleo Gluten Free

Friends, I know how confusing the alternative food choices are and Im here to hopefully clear things up, especially when it comes to sweets, breads, biscuits and anything dough.

I mainly develop grain free, keto friendly, gluten free recipes here, although you may see other recipes as well.

Its easy to confuse gluten free, paleo and keto as one and the same. Sometimes a product can be all three, but they are not interchangeable. I will also discuss briefly the carnivore diet and the new ketovore diet at the end of this article.

  • Gluten foods are usually grain free, but not starch or sugar free. Most keto friendly foods are gluten free, but gluten free products are not necessarily keto friendly and are often high in carbs.
  • Grain free foods are usually gluten free, but not necessarily sugar free. Grain free foods are sometimes keto friendly but not always and can be high in carbs.
  • Paleo foods are grain free, are usually gluten free, sometimes keto friendly, but not always.
  • Products labeled grain free, wheat free, gluten free or keto friendly are not usually low calorie products.
  • Carnivore may or may not be a keto diet, but a keto diet is not a carnivore diet. Stay tuned for the new ketovore diet.

Confused yet? Let me help you navigate these food trends.

What Is Banoffee Pie

Banoffee pie is a classic and much loved British dessert. Its name is a mixture of the words banana and toffee.

Basically, it’s a crispy pie crust filled with toffee and topped with banana slices and whipped cream.

I’ve used almond flour in the pie crust, which is how this recipe is a gluten-free banoffee pie.

The Secret To Easy Low Carb Gluten

To be honest, I didnt expect the first version of this easy almond flour bread to make it to the blog. It was mostly just for the family, and I planned to make several versions before sharing it. But when my husband asked me why I bought real bread, I realized this was one to share right away!

Almond flour on its own tends to be a bit crumbly. Thats perfect for biscuits and cakes, but a sturdier low carb bread loaf is better for sandwiches. It doesnt have the gluten that wheat flour has to make breads chewy and sturdy.

So, whats the secret to a real-bread-like texture? Psyllium husk powder!

If you havent heard of it before, psyllium is a type of fiber from the plantago ovata plants seeds. Its often used in fiber supplements. In keto baking, it helps create a chewy texture and also makes low carb gluten-free bread recipes more sturdy.

But if you use too much psyllium, the end result can be gummy. The good news is that my close to no carb bread recipe doesnt require a lot of psyllium husk powder. I used only 1/4 cup for the entire loaf, compared to 2 cups of almond flour.

The psyllium husk powder transformed what would be a crumbly almond flour bread into sturdy slices that can stand up to sandwiches and spreading just about anything.

You may even be able to reduce the amount to 2-3 tablespoons, which Ill try next time. Youll want to reduce the water a bit if you do that.

Why You’ll Love It

If you are craving something sweet but don’t want something overpowering, then this keto almond flour cake is perfect for you.

It has a light flavor that is delightfully understated. Plus, this keto almond cake is gluten-free too, so it’s the perfect dessert cuisine for people that aren’t even on the keto diet.

This is a fluffy almond flour cake that you can customize in a variety of different ways.

You will love the incredible almond flavor. The cake texture is absolutely divine too. It has a moist crumb that tastes so perfect!

Keep reading, and I’ll share the entire almond flour cake recipe with you.

Common Name For Psyllium Husk

Psyllium husk is the common name for several plant seeds used to produce mucilage, a thick, gluey compound that all plants produce. It is mainly used as a dietary fiber to relieve constipation and in keto baking as a thickener.

Many brands like Metamucil sell psyllium husk powders as supplements not as baking ingredients. This is NOT suitable for keto baking.

Whole psyllium husk is what you need in keto baking. It is grainier and absorbs moisture very well in baking, acting as a glue, a binder. It adds elasticity to keto bread and wraps and binds food.

Youre Still Spiking Inflammation When Eating Gluten

Eggless Low

Gluten-free products may still contain carbs, sugars, preservatives and other forms of additives. So if youre eating these processed foods regularly, youre still triggering inflammation, making it difficult to get healthy.

But with keto, you focus on avoiding carbs and not triggering inflammation. This is an essential difference because inflammation is a significant factor behind most chronic diseases.

Your body triggers inflammation in response to a threat. It helps prevent injuries from becoming fatal and infections from spreading.

But if youre eating processed foods that your body perceives as threats, youre always in this fight or flight mode, causing long-term damage.

So although youll be able to manage celiac disease with a gluten-free diet, youll still trigger inflammation by eating high-carb processed foods. Here is a study that outlines the pros and cons of a gluten free diet for people with celiac disease.
