It took me multiple back-and-forth emails to squeeze this information out of one producer.
Good News: Many wines will fit the bill! On our searches, we discovered a few key clues:

Best Red Wines For Keto
1. Pinot Noir
As the first red on the top keto wines list, pinot noir isnt too far off from a glass of chardonnay with just 3.4 grams of carbs per serving size.
Merlot and cabernet sauvignon take the prize for being the most popular reds in America, but merlot has a slight advantage at 3.7 grams of carbs compared to Cabernets 3.8 grams per glass.
3. Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon may not be the absolute lowest in carbs, but at 3.8 grams per 5 oz. glass, its still a decently dry red wine for anyone following a ketogenic diet.
Syrah is a full-bodied, dry red with a little higher alcohol level on average. Its rich flavors make it the perfect wine to go with a rich meal or to drink all on its own. At just 4 carbs per glass, most keto dieters can get away with a glass or two if youre low-carb, but be careful if youre keto.
5. Red zinfandel
Red zinfandels are full-bodied, flavorful wines that pair well with red meat and other richer meals. At 4.2g of carbs per glass, you can easily enjoy a glass with dinner and stay in ketosis. Be careful if you want to enjoy more than one!

What Is The Lowest
Most wine labels don’t list nutrition facts like sugar, carbs, and calories, so it can be tricky to figure out which are considered low-carb or low-sugar wines. A good rule of thumb is to look at the ABV and residual sugar in wine. As either one goes up, so do the calories and carbs, says Josh Fritsche, production winemaker at William Chris Vineyards. Drier wines have less residual sugar then semi- or off-dry, sweet, or very sweet wines. While residual sugar isn’t often on the label, you can usually figure out out how much sugar is in wineaka the grams of residual sugaron a wine’s tech sheet by doing a little research first.
Keeping that in mind, sweeter white wines like rieslings and moscatos are out of the question if you’re going keto or just looking for low-carb wines, as are cabernet, grenache, and shiraz for reds. Varieties like Oregon pinot noir and French or Italian white wines can help you minimize carbs without sacrificing taste, says Adam Sweders, wine director for DineAmic Group in Chicago.
It’s worth noting that alcohol is really in its own nutrient category, though, and isn’t really a fat, carb, or protein, says Jae Berman, M.S., R.D.N., who works with wine app Vivino. “While alcohols come from carbohydrate sources such as potatoes, grains, and grapes, they’re metabolized differently than a carb because of that ethanol molecule,” she says.
Wonderful Wine Co Malvasia Bianca
The wines in the Wonderful Wine Co collection are just about as healthy as it gets: low-sugar, low-carb, low-sulfite, vegan and made from grapes that are organic and farmed sustainably without pesticides. And, I might add, they come in highly Instagrammable bottles.
The Malvasia Bianca deserves a shoutout, though, and not just because it only has 0.03 grams of sugar this rare crossbreed is a white wine made in the style of a red, resulting in an unusual orange color. Bolder than a typical white but mellower than your standard red, its ultra-versatile. When you cant choose between a white or red, its the best of both worlds: Refreshing enough for a warm summer night, but with enough body and acidity to stand up to a wide variety of foods.
The Wonderful Wine Cos lineup also includes a rose, Spanish syrah, and French white blend, all of which can be purchased in a three-, six-, or 12-pack. Or, if youre feeling indecisive, you can try The Starter Pack to sample several.

What makes a wine keto-friendly
First, its good to know a little bit about how wine is made. The first step is choosing the grapes, which vary by type and region. Once the grapes are picked, theyre crushed and pressed, ultimately turning them into a juice. At this point, they will either turn into white wines or red wines . The juice is left to ferment, which is a process where the sugars turn into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Red wines and white wines are fermented in different ways, using different additives, chemicals and yeast strains, but regardless of the type, they all end up in a barrel where they age and eventually are bottled.
Like all things with Keto, the overall carb and sugar content are the factors to consider in wine. This is determined by a few things. How the wine is made, the alcohol content and how dry is the wine.
Another critical factor is the residual sugar left in the wine. Sugar is always going to be in grapes, after all, its a naturally sweet plant. However, they can ferment long enough so that all the sugar turns into alcohol. Residual sugar is the natural sugar left over by grapes after the fermentation process. Residual sugars can be left behind by stopping the fermentation process early, which would produce a sweeter end product . However, if a winemaker allows the wine to fully ferment, the result is a drier wine with lower RS and, therefore, fewer carbs.

For A Vegan Keto Cake
While flourless chocolate cake recipes usually call for eggs, making a vegan version was surprisingly easy. I simply mixed three tbsp Bobs egg replacer with 150g water , let it sit for a few minutes to thicken, and then used that as my three eggs in the recipe.
If you need six eggs for a double layer cake, just use six tablespoons of the egg replacer mixed with 1 1/4 cup water instead. I havent tried making a version using flax egg yet, but be sure to report back if you experiment!

Keto Wine List: The 15 Best Low
It is the ideal accompaniment to dinner and the end of a hard days work for many people. But how keto-friendly is wine?
While grain-based beverages like beer do not fit a ketogenic lifestyle, wine could. But unlike clear spirits, wine has some residual sugar.
In this article, you can find out which wines are keto-friendly due to their amount of carbs and how you may integrate them into your ketogenic diet.
The Downsides Of Wine On Keto
Even though wine can bring health benefits, you wont lose weight or flatter your health if you consume it excessively.
Therefore, according to studies, the best health benefit is obtained with a glass of red wine a day .
In contrast, too much alcohol increases the risk of heart failure, cancer, liver disease, and mortality in general.
In addition, there are other disadvantages of alcohol consumption in ketogenic diets:
- Although there are no studies about it, you tend to get drunk faster on the keto diet, which you should not underestimate.
- Since the liver preferentially takes care of breaking down alcohol, this can inhibit ketone production and weight loss .
- Its no secret that a large appetite usually follows increased alcohol consumption. The more you drink, the more likely you are to overeat afterward.
Finally, science gives us the ideal amount of alcohol per day, about 90 ml of wine for women and about 180 ml for men .
Indeed, you do not have to drink wine every day. However, now and then, 1-2 glasses of the right wine are allowed even on the keto diet.

Between the low levels of sulfites and the ultra-low sugar content, the nutrition facts of these wines are absolutely astounding. Most contain only around 100 calories per 5 oz serving, with the same alcohol content youd get from more calorie-laden wines.
Can You Have Wine On The Keto Diet
Fortunately, there are some keto-friendly wines that you can drink while maintaining ketosis.
The best keto and low-carb wines are so-called dry wines with as little residual sugar as possible.
Since many wines are low in sugar due to their natural aging process, we dont necessarily rely on a low-carb wine designation.
Sweet wines, unlike dry wines, have a much shorter fermentation process. Because the yeast feeds on the grapes natural sugars during the fermentation process to produce alcohol, the result contains less sugar.
Nevertheless, this does not mean that wine, in general, contains hardly any sugar.
The shorter the fermentation process, the more sugar remains. This leftover sugar contributes to the sweet, fruity taste and many carbohydrates in the wine.
For this reason, you should look for the term dry when choosing wine so it doesnt throw you out of ketosis.

Is Fitvine Wine Actually Healthy
Fact: People are drinking more wine than ever before . Another fact: Alcohol contains a lot of empty calories and can lead to increased weight gain, poor fitness recovery, and long-term brain deterioration. So it makes sense that our keto-obsessed, clean-eating, health-focused society would crave healthier wine options.
Enter: FitVine, a healthy wine company that claims to help you crush life. But is it actually any healthier? Here, a FitVine wine review that dives into the ways this healthy wine is different from regular wine.
Cupcake Lighthearted Pinot Grigio
California-based Cupcake Vineyards is well-known for producing award-winning wines from established regions at surprisingly reasonable prices. In 2020, the company introduced Cupcake Lighthearted, a collection of low-calorie, low-carb wines with less than one gram of sugar per five-ounce serving. The collection has a little something for everyone, including chardonnay, pinot noir, pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc and rosé.
For me, the Pinot Grigio was love at first sip. With zesty lemon notes and a clean finish, its a food-friendly wine you can enjoy anytime. Better yet, thanks to the modest alcohol volume of 8 percent, you wont wake up with a headache after downing a couple of glasses.

Plus, the wines to avoid!
For those of us who identify as wine snobs, it can be difficult to stay the course when a diet restricts alcohol consumption. And lets be honest, most diets and healthy lifestyles require that alcohol intake be moderate, at the very leastfair enough! I know that once I get a glass or two in me, the second plate of french fries seems eminently reasonable. But if youve ever been curious about the keto diet , youll be happy to know that it is possible to enjoy your nightly glass of vino thanks to a few delicious keto wine brands.
Have you ever tried the ketogenic diet? For the diet-averse such as myself, it is an appealing option. Its a low-carb, high-fat diet that puts the body in a state of ketosis, which burns fat for energy at a high level of efficiency. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which supplies energy to the brain. The best part? Chocolate, cheese, meat, and even some wines are good to go while on a keto diet. Phew!
But heres the thing, not all wines are keto-friendly. In general, you want to stick with wines that have low or non-existent sugar content, are low in carbohydrates, and have lower alcohol content. In general, that means a drier wine, like those from France, Italy, and Greece. If a wine is sweet, then its probably not keto. Apologies to dessert wine lovers!

Can You Drink Wine On The Keto Diet
For anyone on the keto diet, the question of how much wine is okay to drink actually becomes one of whether its okay to drink wine at all.
You might be able to drink wine on a ketogenic diet, but even small amounts may be enough to bump you out of nutritional ketosis, explains Paul Kriegler, RD, an assistant program manager at Life Time.
While everyone is different in how they metabolically respond to alcohol and any residual sugar in the wine, Kriegler says that, in his experience, people can either follow a strict ketogenic diet or enjoy wine, rarely both concurrently. But it’s not impossible.
If you are looking to find a wine that will stick as closely as possible to your keto diet, though, there are two things to keep in mind, he adds.
First, you want quality over quantity. Look for a well-made, dry wine that youll enjoy one 4 to 6-ounce glass of and be satisfiedprobably not your bargain-priced winesrather than buying for bulk, he says. Second, you should look for a dry wine HOW CAN SOMEONE TELL IF A WINE IS DRY? LOOK FOR A CERTAIN ALCOHOL CONTENT ON THE LABEL? since those tend to keep the sugar content low.
You can also search for wines, which are specifically sold as “low-sugar wines,” though you should always read the nutrition label to make sure it fits into your diet.
