At the beginning of my low carb journey, I used to eat sour cream topped with salty peanuts. Its still one of my favorite and weirdest combo, but so good at killing cravings. So thats when I had to come up with some kind of yogurt recipe. Here are the ingredients youll need:

  • 2 cups sour cream
  • 4 tbsp heavy whipping cream
  • 3 tsp low carb sweetener of choice
  • vanilla extract or your favorite flavoring

My yogurt version has only 4 grams of carbs for 1/2 cup. Thats a pretty awesome way to cut some carbs.

Ingredients In Low Sugar Yogurt

The yogurt with the least amount of sugar isnt necessarily the healthiest. Just because one brand has more sugar doesnt mean its not keto-friendly. This is because the bacteria in the finished product will gobble up most of the sugars.

Still, if youre buying strictly based on carb counts, keep the following in mind.

Finding a commercial brand with 0 net grams of carbs or 0 grams of sugar is close to impossible. Besides sugar, you should also look at the amount of fat in the nutrition label. If you want to burn your own body fat for energy, youve got to eat a lot of dietary fat.

And whole milk dairy products have the least amount of naturally occurring sugar. So full fat yogurt is always better than low fat when it comes to keto.

Thats why Trader Joes Greek Whole Milk Plain is one of the best choices. Although a serving lists 12 grams carbohydrates with 10 grams of sugar, it contains 22 grams of fat. But the carb info is inaccurate because the culture consumes most of the sugar. So true carbs is more like 4 grams.

To my surprise, I REALLY liked this yogurt. Im surprised because I usually dont enjoy most keto products but this was excellent. The texture is smooth and silky with a distinct berry flavor. Its not too sweet and I really enjoyed eating it.

Youll find this product with the other yogurts in the yogurt aisle, but its actually advertised as a dairy snack. Im not exactly sure why as its a milk-based product.

Its surprisingly high in protein for a keto snack but it only has 2 grams net carbs and 1 gram of sugar in a serving.

Because its a keto snack, its high in fat and therefore also fairly high in calories compared to other low-carb yogurts. So if youre looking to limit your calories, be careful with this one because its hard to only eat part of it, its that good.

Most people will probably get away with not even having to take any insulin with this yogurt, but if you do, be mindful that the high-fat content could delay any blood sugar impact.

Culina Organic Dairy Free Coconut Yogurt Alternative Blueberry Lavender

This is the best non-dairy yogurt Ive tried so far. Its a very thick almost grainy yogurt, but it has a good yogurt flavor and I wasnt in doubt that I was enjoying a blueberry yogurt. You can even see the blueberry seeds at the bottom of the glass jar.

Yep, you read that right, the yogurt comes in a cute little glass jar which makes it a little harder to mix, as the glass is fairly narrow, but also means that you can easily close the lid and put it back in the fridge if you dont want to eat it all. And since its a very high-calorie yogurt , you might only want to eat parts for it in a single serving.

Its a coconut-based yogurt and its sweetened with maple syrup, which unfortunately is fairly high glycemic, so youll get 9 grams of sugar if you eat the whole portion. Nothing wrong with that, but you will most likely see a blood sugar impact, potentially delayed as a serving also has 19 grams of fat.

Another thing to consider is that the protein content is very low so this is not an optimal snack if youre looking to boost your protein intake.

Overall, this is a pretty good low-carb yogurt. The texture is fairly creamy but I would like it to be a bit firmer. That could be a preference thing though. The taste was really good and I could clearly tell that it was strawberry yogurt.

Its sweetened with stevia and natural flavors but does not have any fruit pieces in it. That combination means that they have been able to keep the carb count amazingly low at only 3 grams per serving. Id say thats fairly unusual for a fruit-flavored yogurt.

It also has a very limited blood sugar impact. I did need a little bit of insulin to prevent a blood sugar increase, but I only needed ½ unit of rapid-acting insulin.

Since its Greek low-fat yogurt, the calories and fat are also low, while it packs 12 grams of protein, which makes it a good option for anyone wanting to limit their calorie intake.
