Start by just cutting out the bread, pasta, desserts from your diet. Add in some healthier carbs like sweet potatoes and white potatoes . Start by eating under 80 grams of net carbohydrates per day. After a few weeks of that, go lower and lower in net carb intake.

If you currently eat a very high carbohydrate diet , then you might want to go for this option.

This is what 200 grams of net carbohydrates per day look like with processed food

  • Breakfast: 1 bagel = 44 grams net carbohydrates
  • Lunch: 1 6 Subway sandwich + 1 chocolate chip cookie = approx. 70 grams net carbohydrates
  • Afternoon snack: 1 small milk chocolate bar = 15 grams net carbohydrates
  • Dinner: 1 cup of pasta and 2 scoops of ice cream = 65 grams net carbohydrates

  • Hey Chantelle, I would avoid chewing gum because most of them use sugar alcohols that are not keto approved like malitol and sorbitol. Although it is a small amount, it would still be advised to avoid them. Also, a lot of people feel that the action of chewing leads your brain to think you are consuming food and if no food is coming in, it may lead to your brain thinking you are hungrier than you actually are.

  • Hi,I was advised not to eat any fruit or berries on the keto diet, because it increases the insulin of the high levels of fruit suger. I have keeping a strict keto diet with a maximum intake 30 g of carbohydrates a day.

  • Hi there, a quick question as an Asian, what if i occasionally over do on carbs and/or alcohol as its inevitable in Asian meals sometimes.

    And together with all the fats I already intake, would any adverse effect kick in for not staying in ketosis, besides gaining weight?
