How Many Carbs For Ketosis
Regardless of how many variables impact ketosis, it is important to start somewhere, and carbs are the most important metric to start with on the ketogenic diet.
For most people, keeping total carbs below 35g and net carbs below 25g will get them into a deep ketosis after about a week.
Note: Some sweeteners are considered keto-friendly and do not raise blood sugar levels. These can be subtracted from the total carbs as well. For more, read our Guide to Low Carb Sweeteners >
To eat such a small amount of carbs, you must be vigilant about your food choices. You may find that many of your favorite foods will put you over the carbohydrate limit for the day with just one serving. Even healthier foods like fruits and vegetables are packed with sugar and carbs, but dont get discouraged there is plenty of delicious food you can eat on the ketogenic diet.
Check out this list for some more ideas of what you should and should not eat on the ketogenic diet:
Do Not Eat
- Sweeteners stevia, erythritol, monk fruit, and other low-carb sweeteners >

You must not forget, however, that getting into ketosis isnt all about the carbs you eat. Protein plays an important part on your path toward ketosis as well.
How Much Protein To Eat On Keto
Some people on a keto diet make the mistake of consuming too much protein.
Your body can also convert protein to energy for the body. Eating more than is needed for muscle repair and preservation will cause your body to do this. The goal is to burn body fat for extra energy, not extra protein.
No more than .8 grams per pound of bodyweight should be consumed while on a keto diet. The calculator default is set at .7 grams per pound.
How Many Grams Of Carbs Is Too Much For Keto
The keto diet is a very restrictive and disciplined health plan which means that the guidelines and macronutrient percentages involved in the diet should be followed without any kind of alteration or negligence because if do not follow them, the ketosis process will not start and you will end up with a failed keto diet.
So, the most important thing that starts the ketosis process is lowering eth carbs as much as possible and this nutrient percentage for the keto diet is between 20 to 50 grams in total per day. So, the number of carbohydrates that are too much for keto are the ones that range above 50 grams. You should not eat more than 50 grams of carbs as it will mess up the diet plan.

Sample Keto Meal Plan
- Breakfast: 4 eggs, 1/2 avocado, 1 to 2 Tbsp olive oil
- Lunch: 4 oz baked salmon with 1 Tbsp olive oil, 1/2 bunch asparagus with 1 to 2 Tbsp butter
- Dinner: Rib-eye steak, 2 cups spinach with coconut oil, 2 oz macadamia nuts
Most men consume nearly half of their calories from carbs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And thats not a bad thing its actually within the range of what the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend for optimal health. So, it goes without saying that cutting your intake to less than 10 percent will be a challenge, and may pose some risks.
Aim For At Least 20 Grams Of Protein At Each Meal
Research has suggested that your body needs about 20-30 grams of protein at each meal to ensure that amino acids get incorporated into your muscles.14 Therefore, it may be best to spread out your protein intake evenly among two or three feedings rather than consuming most of it at one meal at least if you want to increase your muscle mass.
Can you eat too much protein in one meal? This is controversial, with surprisingly little research to answer the question. Two studies in 2009 showed that consuming 20 or 30 grams of protein at a meal maximally stimulate muscle growth.15
Adding more in a meal did not increase immediate muscle growth. Some have interpreted this to mean that anything above 30 grams in a single meal was wasted. However, this isnt what the studies showed.
Since there are other potential benefits to protein intake beyond immediate muscle synthesis, these studies dont prove that the extra protein is wasted.
In addition, how does eating just once or twice a day affect the way protein is used? Do low-carb diets change this? Since we dont have answers to these questions, at this time we dont recommend limiting protein to a maximum of 30 grams per meal.

Dirty Keto Is Defined In Several Different Ways Depending On Where You Look
The Facebook group The Dirty Keto Life defines it as a version of keto that focuses on keeping your carbohydrate intake below 20 grams per day, but allowing yourself to eat foods that other keto practitioners might avoid.
While there may be some foods you avoid because YOU react poorly to them, just because a food has added sugar or starch or wheat or whatever it is not off limits if it fits your macros, or the ratio of carbs to fat to protein that you eat each day, the groups admins explain.
Womens Health further defines the dirty keto lifestyle as allowing more processed foods. For example, instead of going all in on avocado and olive oil, they write, you opt for more processed foods, like sliced cheese and pork rinds.
And over on YouTube, cardiologist Dr. Monali Y. Desai defines dirty keto as sticking to the low-carb requirement of the ketogenic diet, without striving to hit a certain amount of protein and fats per day.

Eat Fewer Processed Carbs
Instead of thinking about the total carbs youre eating, assess what those carbs provide to you. Do the majority of your carbs come from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, all of which deliver loads of and health-supporting fiber and antioxidants? Fantastic. Or are you consuming them mostly in the form of added sugars or refined flour? Its fine to enjoy your favorite sweet treats and processed foods sometimes, but the bulk of your carbs should come from whole food sources.

The Best Time To Test
The best way to get the clearest results from testing your ketones and blood glucose is to test before you eat and 30 and 120 minutes after youve eaten and to be consistent about your testing times. So, pick a time to test that works best for you, and try to be consistent with that same time each day. Then you can compare your results to the days prior at the same time. At a minimum, when determining your daily carb limit, you may want to test two hours after you wake up to get your baseline test result, and again two hours after meals.

Types Of Low Carb Diets
The definition of low carb varies among diet plans and dieters.
My goal is to break it down into super simple terms.
Im not a medical expert. Im not a keto diet coach. Im simply someone who has tried quite a few different low carb diets myself over the years.
Hopefully that helps me explain in a way that makes sense to the average person!
When I first started researching the keto diet, I had a lot of questions. These are the things that I wanted to know and the very basics for anyone looking to start the keto diet.
How Many Grams Of Protein On Keto
To calculate your protein intake on keto, keep in mind that there are 4 calories in each gram of protein. This macronutrient should make up about 20% of your daily calories.
Again, we will calculate for a 2,000-calorie diet.
2,000 x 0.20 = 400
400 / 4 = 100
So, most people should aim to eat around 100 grams of protein per day for a 2,000-calorie keto diet.
As always, each persons needs are different and there is room for flexibility. Listen to your body and make adjustments to find what works for you.

- Supplement with magnesium and potassium
- Do some low-intensity aerobic exercise in the morning to encourage fat burning
- Reduce stress by meditating and improving sleep quality
- Eat more fat

How Many Grams Of Carbs Per Day
As you can see, theres no one answerto this question. It depends on multiple factors: your BMI , yourmetabolism, your goal, etc. Most people start with 5% carbs when they first goketo. The most important thing is to get your body into ketosis. Youll then beable to adjust the carbs slightly upward, if you so desire.
No But Really How Many Grams Of Carbs Should You Have Per Day
As a jumping-off point, I generally recommend having a source of carbs at each of your meals. Whether you get it from grains, legumes, starchy veggies, fruit, or dairy is up to you. To help you stay in balance without overthinking, fill half your lunch or dinner plate with non-starchy veggies, a quarter with protein, and the last quarter with carbohydrates. Spreading your carbs out consistently over the course of the day can also help with keeping your blood sugar stable, which supports continuous energy and balanced mood levels.
Here are some examples of meals and snacks that, when you choose one from each category, provide the minimum 130 grams of carbs per day. If you need more, of course, listen to what your body is asking for and incorporate additional carbs where it makes sense for you.

What Does 20 Grams Of Carbs Look Like
So what does 20 grams of carbs look like for potatoes, pasta, rice or bread? It is one potato, a small serving of pasta , about 1/2 cup of white rice, and that half bun. It wont take much of any of these foods to exceed your daily carb limit and take you out of ketosis.31 2020 .
Your Keto Diet Calories
Knowing your daily calorie needs is not only crucial for your ability to lose weight on keto but can also help you quickly estimate your keto macro ratio.
Typically, the more calories you can eat, the more carbohydrates you can eat – and vice versa. And your calorie needs are most strongly tied to your body weight and activity level – the more you weigh and the more you move, the more energy you need to fuel your body.
For a standard ketogenic meal plan, carbs should make up less than 5% of your energy intake. From this, you can quickly estimate grams by dividing carb calories by 4 .
So if you need 1,200 calories a day, your carbohydrate threshold would be 60 calories from carbs or 15 grams of carbs a day. And for someone who eats 2,500 calories a day, that number would increase to 125 carb calories or 31 grams per day.
Bottom line: The higher your daily calorie needs, the more carbs you can eat on keto.
