How Long Do You Need To Stay On The Keto Diet To Lose Weight
Anecdotally, many people report losing weight quickly on a keto diet, says Keatley. Research in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology found that obese dieters lost an average of 44 lb over four months when following a very low calorie keto diet. That said, Keatley suggests to clients that they spend no more than 12 weeks in ketosis because of the uncertainties of following it long-term and the risk of developing nutritional deficiencies.
When people go off a keto diet and begin to incorporate more carbs into their day, they tend to regain some weight during this adjustment period, he says. They also stand to regain all the weight they lost, and potentially more, if they return to their pre-keto ways of eating after feeling deprived on the plan.
How Does Keto Cycling Work Exactly
Keto cycling doesn’t have a set definition. Some people choose to have five or six days on keto followed by a day or two off. Others will do keto for 10 to 12 days followed by three to four days off.
Devine typically doesnt recommend taking more than two days off keto. She says to start with just one day so you can see how your body responds and how quickly you return to ketosis.
If you have too many carbohydrates, youre going to build up your glycogen stores, and its going to be very hard for you to get back into ketosis, she says. She says to think about your glycogen stores, which are your bodys supply of stored carbohydrates, as a gas tank. As long as we dont let that tank dip over, we can deplete it pretty quickly again and get back into ketosis, she says. But as soon as we go beyond that three or four days , our tanks flood over and you start to actually store some of that glucose as fat, and it becomes very difficult to deplete that tank again and get back into ketosis.
On those higher-carb days, Devine recommends sticking to healthy carbs with low amounts of sugar rather than going on a full-blown carb binge. Foods like fruit, sweet potatoes, and whole grains rather than white bread and sweets will make it easier for the body to adapt to ketosis again.
How Many Days Does It Take To Get Into Ketosis
According to Healthline.com, it typically takes 2-4 days , as long as you stay at the recommended 50 grams or under carbohydrates.
Obviously, everyone is different, and the following factors can affect how long it takes to achieve ketosis:
Achieving ketosis doesnt have to be impossible, as long as you go into the diet with the correct mindset. By using some of these of these suggestions you can put yourself on the path to success!

What Are Your Health Goals
So 50 grams of carbs per day might seem like a lot to many of you. How many grams of carbs on keto you eat depends on your goals and what is sustainable for you long term. If you want a number to aim for, we recommend keeping your carbs in the 20 to 50 grams of carbs a day range. If you want to be more strict, keep your carbs at 20 to 30 grams a day. You can also try to stick with total carbs instead of net carbs, which net carbs are total carbs minus fiber and sugar alcohols.
Research does show that a person can reach ketosis by keeping their carb intake at 20 to 50 grams of carbs a day. So if your goal is ketosis and weight loss, you definitely want your total carbs under that threshold. If your goal is improved health, or you just feel better on keto, you might be able to go closer to the higher end of 50 grams of carbs a day.
How To Calculate Your Protein Intake
Protein is very beneficial to your body, providing amino acids to help gain muscle mass and burn body fat. On keto, roughly 20-25% of your calories will come from protein. While you may need more protein if youre an extremely active person, too much protein may cause gluconeogenesis.
Depending on activity level, most people consume between .61.0 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass. For example, a female may weigh 150 lbs, but have just 112.5 pounds of lean body mass. For her, 90112.5 grams of protein per day would be suitable.

How Much Weight Can You Lose On The Keto Diet
Theres no doubt that a ketogenic diet may help spur weight loss and anecdotal reports of drastic transformations are easy to find. I have clients who have lost a significant amount of weight on a keto diet, but they were obese when starting and had quite a bit of fat to lose. These individuals have fairly drastic body transformations, says Keatley.
In Journal of Clinical Endocrinology, 20 people with obesity who followed a very low calorie keto diet for four months lost an average of 44 pounds , mainly from body and visceral fat. In Nutrition Metabolism, normal-weight adults who followed a non-energy restricted keto diet for six weeks lost about 4 lb in both fat and lean body mass.
But long-term studies show that theres not much of a difference in weight loss between keto and other diets. One meta-analysis published in October 2013 in the BMJ compared adults on a ketogenic diet with those on a conventional low-fat diet. After at least a year, those on the keto diet lost an additional two pounds compared with the group who slashed fat. The bottom line is that diets, including keto, may help you lose the same amount of weight in the long run. With that news, know that there may be a better option out there for you, says Keatley.

Carb Range For Ketosis
Getting into ketosis is pretty simple. At its core, if you eat less than 20 net gram carbs per day, you can pretty much assume you are there.
The problem comes from the fact that people who have eaten a high-carb diet want the foods theyre used to more than their desire to get into ketosis. But did you know there are ways around this without lowering your carbs so drastically?
As mentioned above, halving the number of carbs you usually eat could help you to lose some weight.
At Konscious Keto, we recommend tapering off carbs to prevent keto flu and feeling yuck this is a symptom that your body has been shocked by a sudden dietary change.
When you go slow, you also create more long-term and sustainable choices. The ultimate goal is to make these changes until you find a pace of fat loss that works for you.

How Many Grams Of Fat On Keto
To calculate the amount of fat, you need to know that there are 9 calories per 1 gram of fat. Also keep in mind that on a ketogenic plan, 70-80% of your calories should come from fat,
Lets say were following a 2,000-calorie diet.
2,000 x 0.7 = 1,400
1,400 / 9 = 155.6
1,600 / 9 = 177.8
You should have between 155.6 and 177.8 grams of fat per day on a 2,000-calorie keto diet.
Follow the same calculations based on your daily caloric intake.

So How Many Carbs Should I Be Eating Each Day To Lose Weight
Dietary guidelines recommend you get between 45 to 65 percent of your daily calories from carbohydrates, Brissette says. But since everyone needs a different number of calories every day, there is no set number of carbs that equals a low carb diet for everyone. If you know how many calories you typically consume daily, you can do a little math to find your low-carb range: For example, if youre eating 1,800 calories per day, that equates to 203 to 293 grams of carbs per day.
Dropping carbs below the 45 to 65 percent range isnt recommended for most people because it makes getting all of your vitamins and minerals each day far more challenging, says Brissette.
With that in mind, you might have to make some modifications in order to find the sweet spot that works best for you and your weight-loss goals, says Liz Blom, RD, a Minnesota-based nutrition and wellness coach.
In general, you want to get 45 to 65 percent of your daily calories from carbohydrates.
She suggests getting about 45 percent of your daily calories from carbs if you’re trying to lose weight, and using a tool like MyFitnessPal to track your intake. If you dont lose any weight after the first week, you can try going lower, says Blom. Conversely, if you start losing weight but begin to feel super sluggish, try upping your carbohydrate intake a bit and see how you feel and how your weight responds.
On the other hand, says Schaub, you might want to aim for the higher end of the carb range if you:
How Many Carbs Do You Actually Eat On A Keto Diet
A keto diet is generally made up of 70 to 75 percent fat, 20 to 25 percent protein, and 5 to 10 percent carbohydrates, says Jill Keene, a registered dietitian nutritionist in private practice in White Plains, New York. The exact number of grams of carbohydrates will be different for everyone, but is generally around 20 to 50 g per day. Many people on a keto diet count net carbs, which is total carbs minus fiber. Fiber isnt counted in the carbohydrate total, because its not digested. Either way, this number of carbs is very low and requires careful planning. Eating a little fruit, starchy vegetables, sugary foods, or whole grains can easily kick you out of ketosis.

How Much Protein Should I Eat Every Day
Getting the right amount of protein neednt be complicated or stressful. Most of the time, youll end up within your target range by simply eating an amount that is satisfying and paying attention to when you begin to feel full.
Here are the amounts of food you need to eat to get 20-25 grams of protein:
- 100 grams of meat, poultry or fish
- 4 large eggs
- 240 grams of plain Greek yogurt
- 210 grams of cottage cheese
- 100 grams of hard cheese
- 100 grams of almonds, peanuts, or pumpkin seeds
Other nuts, seeds, and vegetables provide a small amount of protein, roughly 2-6 grams per average serving. You can see a more detailed list in our guide on the top 10 high-protein foods.
The image above shows 20 grams of protein in four different ways. Almonds, salmon, eggs and chicken thighs.
Below youll find examples of three different levels of daily protein intake using the same foods:
How Many Carbs To Eat On The Keto Diet
The keto diet isnt a carb-free but just really low in carbs. Just 5% of your total daily calories should be in the form of carbs. For most people, this is 20-30 grams of carbohydrates per day depending on your stats and exercise adjusted TDEE.
Also, note that is net carbs, so carbs that dont produce energy like certain types of fiber do not count towards your totals.
How Many Eggs Can I Eat On Keto
You must consume a minimum of six whole eggs every day. When feasible, local, pastured eggs should be used in place of commercial eggs. Three hours before night, you should cease eating completely. You can have up to three cans of diet Coke every day, but try to limit yourself to one or two.
Do You Have To Count Calories
Ketogenic diets generally don’t give rules for calories, although they might give suggestions. For example, the Atkins 20 Diet â one of the most well-known ketogenic diets â recommends that women aim for 1,500 to 1,800 calories a day, while men aim for 1,800 to 2,200. It also advises dieters to limit empty calories and to stick to a list of approved foods for each phase of the diet.
One good thing about a ketogenic diet, says Franziska Spritzler, RD, author of The Low-Carb Dietitian’s Guide to Health and Beauty, is that most people will naturally stay within this calorie range while on the plan. While it’s easy to fill up on empty carbs like crackers and cookies, she says, those foods are off limits on a keto diet. It’s more difficult to eat large portions of keto-approved foods that are higher in fat, protein and fiber.
“You’re going to be eating veggies, which are high in fiber and can fill you up on very few calories,” she says. “And you’re also going to be eating things like nuts and meat and cheese and oil â which, yes, are high in calories, but they’re also very satiating, so you really only have to eat small portions to get your fill.”

Can Keto Adaptation Change Your Carb Limit
Keto adaptation is a state where the body becomes familiar with ketosis. If you are on the keto diet for the second time, your body will switch to ketosis quicker than the first time. For example, if it took three weeks for your body to go into ketosis, the second time, it might take two weeks. When this happens, can it change your carb limit? Yes, it can.
If your body enters ketosis easily, it invariably means that you can now eat more carbs compared to when you first started the ketogenic diet. The best way to start is to limit your carb intake to 20-25 grams per day for the first 3 to 6 months. When your body adapts to the new keto lifestyle, you can slowly increase your carb intake to a maximum of 50 grams per day. Keep checking your ketone levels at equal intervals.
Now that you know how many carbs to consume, the difference between net carbs and total carbs, and how to be on ketosis, it is crucial to know what carbs to consume and avoid. Scroll down to get a complete list.
Putting It All Together Carbs For Ketosis
How many carbs on keto? Short answer: keep your total carbs below 35 grams.
But even if you eat no carbohydrates at all, you may not get into a deep ketosis if youre not eating the right amount of protein. The keto calculator is the simplest tool that you can use to help you figure out how much to eat of the three macronutrients for optimal results.
Once you are eating the right amount of carbs, protein, and fat, it may take up to 3 weeks for you to get into a deep ketosis. To speed up the process, you can use high-intensity exercise and intermittent fasting to deplete glycogen and low-intensity exercise and a 1-2 day fast to increase ketone levels more quickly. Try supplementing with ketone salts or MCT oil for an extra ketone boost.
These recommendations along with the recommendations in our beginners guide will work for almost everyone that is starting the ketogenic diet.
