As a decades-old ingredient in diet soda, aspartame or E951 is the most well-known synthetic sweetener. Therefore, it sets the bar for sucralose as well as plant-based sweeteners.

One study compared blood sugar and insulin levels after consuming stevia, sugar, and aspartame in conjunction with a meal.

In this study, aspartame was able to increase insulin levels more than regular sugar.

Blood sugar was also highest with aspartame after 30 minutes, although it did not initially spike as steeply, such as after sugar consumption.

On the other hand, people who consumed stevia showed the weakest reactions during the short period .

A more recent study showed no significant differences among the three sweeteners over three hours after consuming a sweetened beverage .

In summary, from this perspective, aspartame is about as unhealthy as sugar.

Due to lower peak levels, stevia performs better in direct comparison to aspartame and sucralose.

In particular, the significant effect on blood sugar makes sucralose probably the worse option than stevia when it comes to weight loss.

Nevertheless, stevia also has significant drawbacks and is by no means the holy grail of sweeteners.

For example, stevia is just as harmful to the intestinal flora as sucralose or aspartame .

And for the most part, youd be right! I mean, the whole point is to slash carb intake and keep sugars low in order to lose weight and feel healthier. So, goodbye donuts!

Yet, you actually CAN have sweeteners when on keto for those times you need to indulge a bit in a sweet snack or dessert. Youre human, anyhow!

So, if you are going to give in to something rich and sugary, you want to make sure it is still free of or low in carbohydrate count and does not have additives in the sugar that will create blood sugar spikes or lead to swings and crashes later on.

If you do choose sugar that compromises your blood sugar levelselevating them and throwing your metabolism offthen you might fall out of ketosis, which will cause the body to stop producing ketones and to start storing fat, rather than using it for fuel.

I think the Natural Sweeteners like Stevia and Monk Fruit are great for sweetening your coffee or tea, but not great for baking.

My favorite alternative sweeteners for baking are Swerve and Truvia. I do sometimes use a little packet of Splenda in sauces. I think artificial sweeteners should be avoided.

    Erythritol is a keto-friendly sweetener that we use liberally in our recipes particularly in our low-carb desserts that require a crumbly consistency.

    While we can tell slight variances in the taste of desserts with erythritol vs. sugar, we cannot tell which is the sugar dessert or the erythritol one. Just that there is a slight difference.

    One point to note is that erythritol is not hygroscopic .

    For this reason when making recipes that require a moist texture we use a blend of erythritol and stevia such as Natvia .
