Fruit Might Cause Bloating And Indigestion
As alluded to earlier, fruit contains large amounts of a simple sugar known as fructose, which is digested a bit differently than other simple sugars.
Fructose can cause indigestion, abdominal cramping, and bloating due to poor absorption in the lower gastrointestinal tract.
Moreover, the fruit we consume nowadays tends to be much larger in terms of size, meaning as a whole, we are eating more and more fructose. Not to mention the additive high-fructose corn syrup in many processed foods these days.
Now, bloating and indigestion wont intrinsically hinder weight loss. However, these symptoms can still lead to frustrating results and poor body image in chronically bloated people and experience gut distress. Fortunately, there are probiotics for gut health.
What Is The Keto Diet
The Keto diet is an ultra-low carb diet that focuses on healthy fats with a moderate amount of protein. Generally, this macronutrient ratio looks like 70-75% healthy fats, 20-25% protein and 5-10% carbohydrates. If you were eating a 2000 calorie diet this would mean that you would eat roughly 1500 calories of healthy fats, 400 calories of protein and 100 calories or less of carbohydrates.
Foods that are commonly found on Keto include leafy green veggies, nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, meat, eggs and some dairy. You should avoid sugar, processed foods, breads, pasta, sugary fruits and starchy vegetables.
People usually begin the Keto diet in order to lose weight. In addition to its ability to help you shed stubborn pounds, Keto can also give you increased energy and mental clarity as well as benefiting your heart and brain health. A lot of the people who follow a Keto diet find that they have more energy throughout the day while also sleeping better at night. Its also been shown to lower cholesterol levels and stabilize your blood sugar.

Is Fruit Ok For Keto
The short answer: yes, absolutely. The longer answer is that you need to be a bit specific about which fruits to eat on keto, and of course, limit the quantity.
Remember, if youre on the keto diet, your main priority is to limit your total net carbohydrate intake to about 5-10% of your total daily calorie intake.
For the majority of people, this means eating around 30 grams of net carbohydrates per day . Intuitively, if youre eating an apple as part of your breakfast, youll be blowing past your allowable keto carb intake in a hurry.
The thing about fruits is that most of them are very dense in sugar .
For example, one cup of grapes packs a whopping 26 grams of net carbs, 23 of which are sugar. If you go portion out one cup of grapes, youll realize that its really not much food at all. Most people can put away one cup of grapes and barely even notice they ate anything.
This brings up the point that fruit is not nearly as satiating as fat or protein. Thus, if youre trying to lose weight on the keto diet, youll want to focus mainly on protein and fat to keep your appetite under control and reduce food cravings.
Avocado: The Lowest Carb Most Versatile Keto Fruit

- Thiamin: 6% of the DV
- Potassium: 5% of the DV

Which Oranges To Choose
One important thing to note is that oranges differ greatly, depending on variety and time of year. Some are very sweet, some less so. Some have thick skins, some have thin ones. That’s why you should always taste the batter and adjust the sweetness if needed.
My oranges were VERY sweet and had a surprisingly thin skin. A thick-skinned orange will result in a more bitter batter, therefore you might want to increase the sweetener to offset it.
If your oranges DO have a thicker skin, you can cut off the top and bottom before blending.

Low Carb Berries: Natures Low Carb Candy
By low carb berries, I mean blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries. Though these are a bit higher in carbs than avocados and tomatoes, a small portion is all it takes to boost the flavor and antioxidant content of your favorite keto-friendly breakfast or dessert.
When incorporating them into your meals, make sure you consider their carb counts in the context of your daily keto carb limit.
Can You Have Fruit Juice On Keto
Its generally recommended to stay away from fruit juice on a keto or low carb eating plan. Many commercial juices contain sweeteners, in addition to natural sugars already present in fruit. Juice is more concentrated than whole fruit and contains a higher carb count, even with no sugar added.
The other issue with juice is that it gets rid of all the fiber, which is one of fruits main benefits. Fiber is a carbohydrate that the body does not digest, so it does not count towards net carbs. Even though fiber itself isnt digested, it can help improve digestion of other foods by helping them pass more easily through the intestines and softening stools.
If youre craving a taste of your favorite fruit, skip juice and go for the real thing, in moderation of course.

Fruit Juices And Ketogenic Diets
One of the foods that people must completely eliminate while adhering to ketogenic diets is fruit juice. This is because fruit juices are a concentrated source of carbohydrates and sugar, and some may have added sugars. If you think there’s already a lot of sugar in that mango or apple, don’t even consider going near most commercially produced juices.
According to Kathy McManus, director of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital, fruit juices and other from-concentrate products can increase your blood sugar and your calorie consumption. This means that juices are very keto unfriendly. You also want to be careful about making your own juice at home, even from vegetables. Juicing your fruits and vegetables concentrates the carbs and sugar and may be too much on your low-carb diet.

The detailing of net carbs vs total carbs might help you feel better about eating some fruit on the keto diet. Keto-friendly fruits are high in fiber and lower in sugar than less keto-friendly varieties, giving them a lower net carb count.
Controlling your carbs on the keto diet is really all about controlling your blood sugar to prevent insulin spikes and avoid storing glycogen. Fiber prevents the spikes and essentially cancels out some of the carbs, creating some great options for you in the fruit aisle.
To calculate grams of net carbs, subtract fiber from total grams of carbs. So if you have 10 grams of total carbs and 7 grams of fiber, your net carbs are only 3 grams for that pieces of fruit. Great news if you’re craving some berries or want to add a little bit of sweet to your next keto smoothie recipe. Let’s dig into the details.
