Can You Eat Hummus On Keto

Is Hummus Keto Here’s What A Nutritionist Says

Is Hummus Keto-Friendly? Can I Eas On Ketogenic Diet? Dr.Berg

Because sometimes you just need to dip something, even when you’re watching your macros.

Starting any new diet can feel difficult when you have to create a whole new lineup of go-to snacks and mealsbut that rings especially true for keto dieters who have to seriously cut back on carbs.

One go-to snackhummus and vegetablesis a favorite among dieters, but is it keto-friendly? According to Robin Foroutan, RDN, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, not exactly.

That’s because the main ingredient in hummus is chickpeas, aka garbanzo beansand one cup of garbanzo beans contains 45 grams of carbs, according to the US Department of Agriculture. When those beans are made into hummus, that number goes up to 49.5 grams of carbs.

Clearly, that’s way more carbs than youll want in one sitting on the keto diet. And while it’s worth stating that one tablespoon of hummus only has about 3 grams of carbsit’s not exactly worth it. While you could fit in a small amount of hummus, it wouldnt make it satisfying, says Foroutan, who suggests you instead get your carbs from produce like dark leafy greens and other veggies like asparagus, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli.

Use As A Dip Versus A Garnish

If youre using hummus for a dip, youll want to think carefully about what youre dipping in your hummus.

Most crackers are too high in carbs for the keto diet, just like pita bread, unless youre specifically looking for keto-friendly versions. Even the carbs in carrots add up quickly .

Instead, celery, raw broccoli, and raw cauliflower are good dip options.

If youre worried about overdoing it with a dip, try using hummus as a garnish. Add it to a salad or soup for a flavorful and creamy touch, or use it as a low-calorie swap for mayonnaise when making low-carb sandwiches or wraps.

Treating hummus as a garnish rather than a dip makes it easier to manage your portion sizes.

abstract

Hummus works in small amounts on the keto diet, but you might want to use it as a garnish rather than a dip. This is because his net carbs add up quickly.

While a small portion or two of hummus can work fine on the keto diet every now and then, you might want a low-carb alternative, especially if youre craving a dip. Here are some options:

Summary

Spreads and dips like baba ganoush, liver pate, and black soy hummus contain significantly less carbohydrates than hummus and may be better suited to the keto diet.

While hummus is fine on the keto diet, youll want to limit yourself to a small amount. Consider using it as a garnish rather than a dip and avoid dessert flavors.

You can also consider other low-carb dips and spreads, such as baba ganoush, pate, or black soy hummus.

The TKD is meant for highly active people who need more carbs around their training times. This particular keto diet allows for an additional 20 to 50 grams of carbs both before and after your workout window.

The CKD is meant for athletes, bodybuilders and other people that exercise at such high intensities that they simply need more carbs in order to replenish their glycogen stores.

The CKD is not much different from the SKD for five to six days of the week. During these days, youll be following a typical SKD, while the other one to two days of the week are meant for carb backloading. This means the days youre carb backloading will be filled with high-carbs foods.

My Favorite Tahini Brand

Ive tried a lot of brands of tahini over the years, but I stumbled upon a brand about a year and a half ago from a brand called Soom.

Their tahini is amazing , and I also love the story of their company. It was founded by three sisters in Philadelphia, so its a completely woman-owned company. What can I say women know how to do tahini right.

They have jars of regular, organic, and even single-serve packets. Yum!

How Is Traditional Hummus Made

Traditional hummus is made by blending together cooked or mashed chickpeas, olive oil, freshly squeezed lemon juice, fresh, whole garlic cloves, and spices.

The chickpeas will need to be soaked overnight in water, drained the next day, rinsed off with fresh water, and then cooked before they can be used in a hummus recipe.

After they are soaked overnight, the easiest way to cook your chickpeas is to boil them in a pot of water until they are soft.

Soaking your chickpeas and other legumes overnight in water helps deactivate certain proteins that are hard to digest. People who eat baked chickpeas without soaking them first may have problems digesting these proteins.

This is one of the reasons why many people with digestive disorders cut out legumes, such as chickpeas, from their diet. However, most of the digestive distress caused by chickpeas can be eliminated or greatly reduced by soaking them overnight in water.

For convenience, many people used canned chickpeas, which often come in cooked form so that you dont have to soak or boil your chickpeas. However, the best tasting hummus is always made from scratch using fresh ingredients.

Here is a recipe for traditional hummus :

  • One can or 200 grams/7 ounces of canned chickpeas
  • 2 whole garlic cloves
  • A pinch of sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

You can get creative and add other vegetables to your hummus, such as roasted red pepper. Some people top their hummus with additional oil, chopped garlic, or sesame seeds.

Low Carb Hummus Substitute Recipe

Because the primary ingredient in hummus is chickpeas, and chickpeas are not allowed on the ketogenic diet menu, it would be hard to create a keto recipe that mimics traditional hummus exactly.

What can you substitute for chick peas in a keto hummus? Many people use cauliflower in place of chickpeas to make their own keto-friendly hummus at home.

Cauliflower is a good substitute because it has a white color and blends in with the tahini paste to take on the look of traditional hummus.

Cauliflower also has a mild flavor so it takes on the taste of the tahini. Many people report that they dont miss traditional hummus very much when they use cauliflower in place of chickpeas.

You can also use avocado in place of chickpeas to create a keto-friendly hummus. Avocado is smooth, rich and creamy, and it makes a great substitute as a keto-friendly dip.

But keep in mind that using avocado will turn your hummus green and this is not the traditional color of hummus. To avoid the green color, you could try adding some sour cream to the mix. But this concoction is far from the traditional hummus recipe.

Try this low-carb non-chickpea hummus recipe the next time youre in need of a healthy dip but dont want all the carbs.

How to make keto hummus:

  • 3 cups of cauliflower, cooked so that they are soft
  • 2 whole garlic cloves
  • 2-3 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons tahini
  • A pinch of sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

What Is Hummus Anyway

Hummus is a middle-eastern staple typically made with chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, garlic, lemon, and the spices of your choice. It’s also really common to top hummus dips with ingredients like artichokes or sun-dried tomatoes.

Hummus literally means “chickpea” in Arabic, and it’s also rumored to be an aphrodisiac. Cookbooks dating back to the 13th century have had hummus recipes, so it’s one of the world’s oldest spreads.

In the U.S., hummus is typically eaten as a dip, but around the Mediterranean sea hummus is a much more fundamental part of their cuisine, with locals spreading it on sandwiches like we do mayonnaise and generally having it alongside bread with every meal.

It’s extremely popular due to its savory flavor, and nutritional appeal .

How Much Carbohydrates Should You Consume On A Daily Basis

Carbohydrates should account for 45 to 65 percent of your daily calorie intake, according to the dietary recommendations. So, on a 2000-calorie diet, you should aim for 225 to 325 grams of carbohydrates each day. If you need to reduce weight, however, consuming 50 to 150 grams of carbohydrates can help you lose weight more quicker.

Are Chickpeas Good For You

Hummus is made from ingredients that provide a variety of health advantages. Chickpeas, for example, are high in good dietary fibre, which can aid in the growth of helpful intestinal bacteria.

This was demonstrated in a three-week trial that followed 12 healthy adults who ate 200 grammes of chickpeas per day or raffinose fibre from chickpeas.

The findings revealed an increase in good bacteria and a decrease in bad bacteria in the intestines, indicating that they can help with digestion.

Because some of the fibre in chickpeas is converted by the intestines into a short-chain fatty acid called butyrate, it has this effect. Butyrate is known to nourish and protect intestinal cells, as well as having other health benefits such as lowering the risk of colon cancer.

Furthermore, research has shown that consuming chickpeas lowers bad LDL cholesterol, which protects heart health.

Over the course of five weeks, 45 adults were given the option of adding chickpeas or wheat to their diet. People who ate chickpeas had 4.6 percent lower LDL cholesterol than those who ate wheat, according to the findings.

How Can I Eat Hummus Without Carbs

If you want to limit carbs even further, you can also try mixing up the recipe.

Hummus can be made with a variety of non-starchy vegetables, including carrots or cauliflower, Kristen told POPSUGAR.

Consider making your own, combining both garbanzo beans and cauliflower for a lower carbohydrate hummus option..
