That’s because the main ingredient in hummus is chickpeas, aka garbanzo beansand one cup of garbanzo beans contains 45 grams of carbs, according to the US Department of Agriculture. When those beans are made into hummus, that number goes up to 49.5 grams of carbs.

Clearly, that’s way more carbs than youll want in one sitting on the keto diet. And while it’s worth stating that one tablespoon of hummus only has about 3 grams of carbsit’s not exactly worth it. While you could fit in a small amount of hummus, it wouldnt make it satisfying, says Foroutan, who suggests you instead get your carbs from produce like dark leafy greens and other veggies like asparagus, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli.

Use As A Dip Versus A Garnish

If youre using hummus for a dip, youll want to think carefully about what youre dipping in your hummus.

Most crackers are too high in carbs for the keto diet, just like pita bread, unless youre specifically looking for keto-friendly versions. Even the carbs in carrots add up quickly .

Instead, celery, raw broccoli, and raw cauliflower are good dip options.

If youre worried about overdoing it with a dip, try using hummus as a garnish. Add it to a salad or soup for a flavorful and creamy touch, or use it as a low-calorie swap for mayonnaise when making low-carb sandwiches or wraps.
