Health Benefits Of Cabbage

What I eat everyday as a keto vegan – Savoy cabbage mash | Keto vegan & gluten-free

Cabbage is abundant in several vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that plays a vital role in the proper function of the immune system.

Cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and other low-carb vegetables are also a rich source of vitamin K. Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning its better absorbed when consumed with a source of healthy fats, such as extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil. Vitamin K is a key player in bone health, helping to prevent blood clotting, promoting healthy brain function, ensuring proper metabolic function, and even helping prevent cancer.

Along with being rich in vitamin C and vitamin K, cabbage and other cruciferous veggies are abundant in folate, vitamin E, and many micronutrients. Cabbage also contains high amounts of phytonutrients nutrients that protect plants from foreign invaders and give them their color, flavor, and smell.

The phytonutrients found in red cabbage, such as sulforaphane, make this veggie a powerful fighter against inflammation. Thanks to this high nutrient content, cruciferous veggies have been shown to protect cells from DNA damage, provide antiviral and antibacterial perks, inhibit tumor cell growth, and protect against different types of cancer

Avocado: Undoubtedly One Of The Best Vegetables To Eat On A Keto Diet

Although Avocados technically fall into the category of a fruit rather than a vegetable, most people view them as a vegetable. Avocados are native to Mexico and have a smooth, creamy texture, covered by a dark green thick skin.

They are highly nutritious and packed full of good fats. Perfect for a keto diet, they are versatile and perfect for you.

High in fiber and low in carbs, a 200-gram avocado contains 13.5 grams of fiber and only 3.6 grams of net carbs. Avocados are also high in potassium, actually providing more than bananas.

The oil in Avocado contains Oleic acid, which is what is also in olive oil with natural anti-inflammatory properties.

Eat it as a snack with a delicious homemade keto dressing, or as guacamole to eat as a side dish. Use it in savory dishes, but interestingly it can also be used for puddings. Blended, it makes an excellent keto chocolate mousse.

Fresh Cabbage Vs Frozen Cabbage

I use fresh green cabbage for this recipe. I always opt for fresh ingredients if possible. I personally have never seen bags of cabbage in the freezer section of my grocery store, but if you see it in your store then feel free to use it.

Another idea is buying fresh cabbage, cutting it up and then freezing it to use it in the future for a keto cabbage side dish. If you wrap it properly to prevent freezer burn then you will enjoy it.

How To Avoid Eating Too Much Cabbage

You generally should be able to fit cabbage in your keto diet. Even so, in some situations you may have to exercise some portion control. Preparing a big bowl of cabbage and hoping that you dont eat too much is not the ideal way to do this.

You can avoid eating too much cabbage with some of the following tips:

  • Plan ahead, how much cabbage will you eat?
  • Put the planned amount in a bowl and leave the rest of the cabbage out of sight
  • Dont eat during other activities like watching TV

If you notice you get out of ketosis you may need to reduce the number of cabbage you eat.

Eating as much as you want while being on a diet sounds like a fantastic dream. You must be hearing about guilt-free eating while being on the keto diet, but it is mere speculation.

Can you eat as much as you want on a keto diet? This question has two answers depending on how much you want to eat.

If you want to eat a balanced diet with measured calories and carefully selected food portions that are keto-friendly, too, the answer is YES!

But if you want to eat insanely, like a whole lamb in one sitting or an entire tree of Avocado a day, that is, definitely, a NO!

How Many Carbs Are In Cabbage

Chicken Bacon Ranch Lettuce Wraps (Keto, Paleo, Whole 30)

One cup of chopped green cabbage contains 5 grams of carbohydrates. This gets broken down into 2.2 grams of fiber and 2.8 grams of sugar, which means the total net carbs in a cup of cabbage is just 2.8 grams. Red cabbage clocks in a little higher at 5.1 grams per cup, due to its higher sugar content.

As most ketogenic diets suggest restricting carbohydrates to 25-50 grams per day, cabbage very easily fits into the ketogenic diet.

Why The Keto Diet Produces Weight Loss

Keto works for most people because it forces their bodies to change the way their metabolisms function. The body is designed to take the carbohydrates we eat, and change them into the glucose thats used as fuel by the body and brain. A keto meal plan cuts daily carb intake to the bone, meaning that the body cant produce glucose to meet its daily energy needs.

Instead, it enters a metabolic state known as ketosis, and then creates a different energy source called ketones. Ketones are produced in the liver by burning stored body fat, but that process only occurs by default. As soon as the body is given more carbs that it can use, it stops making ketones, stops burning body fat and the weight loss caused by fat burning screeches to a halt.

In short, as soon as a keto dieter eats too many carbohydrates, theyre kicked out of ketosis and the diet stops working that means its crucial to stay within daily carb limits.

How Many Carbs On The Keto Diet

KETO MEAL PREP – KIELBASA AND CABBAGE // WHAT I EAT ON A KETO DIET

For example, a typical keto diet plan suggests that healthy fats make up 65-75% of total calories, protein makes up 20-25% of total calories, and carbs make up only 5-10% of total calories.

If you are new to keto or just looking to track your carb intake to stay below the often-recommended 20-30 grams of carbs per day its helpful to know the carb count of your favorite vegetables.

What Vegetables Can You Eat On Keto

An important rule of thumb to keep in mind is that if the vegetable is grown above ground , then chances are you can eat it on keto. Leafy vegetables are typically good as well. They are the healthy low carb vegetables that you want. Lettuce is an exception in that if you eat too much you can easily knock yourself out of ketosis.

If the vegetable grows below ground then you should stay away. These are typically the higher carb vegetables. Root vegetables are the ones that are more dangerous for you on the keto diet.

Substitute For Bread Or Tortillas

Cabbage makes a great substitute for bread, especially where recipes call for lettuce as a wrapper or container. Cabbage can easily substitute for lettuce in lettuce wraps and makes a great tortilla due to its sturdier nature.

The key is to blanch the leaves of cabbage in a pot of boiling water for about 30 seconds. This makes the leaves more flexible and tender, allowing you to wrap your favorite burger, sandwich, or stuffing with ease.

Is Southern Fried Cabbage Keto

Keto Chinese Cabbage Salad

Yes, this fried cabbage with bacon recipe is keto! Each 1 cup serving has 8 grams net carbs and only 143 calories, so its light even though its filling.

Traditional Southern fried cabbage often has a tablespoon or two of sugar added to it, which makes it less than ideal for keto. I dont think sugar is necessary at all, but you can add a dash of monk fruit sweetener if you prefer yours sweet and still want to skip sugar.

How Much Can You Eat On A Keto Diet

The Keto diet is high in a fat diet with moderate protein and deficient carbohydrate intake. But being high on fats doesnt make it a calorie-free diet. Calories come with fats and proteins too. Carbohydrates are not the only source of it.

In fact, fats provide more calories than carbohydrates. 1 gram of carbs or protein will provide 4 calories, while 1 gram of fat provides 9 calories. It is twice as much as the calories from carbs and proteins.

So when it is said that you should be taking around 70% fats, 25% proteins, and 5% carbs in your diet, we are talking about the percentage portions of 2000-3000 daily calorie intake.

If you are trying to lose weight, you should be taking the food portions sufficient for 2000-3000 calories only. You need to split your food intake into 4-7 small quantities in a day, i.e., breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in between these meals.

You need to be very clear that if you want to take, say between 340-350 calories in a portion, you have two options:

You can eat a medium-sized cupcake following a hamburger and 330 ml coca-cola can or

A steaming cup of butter coffee with 2 boiled whole eggs

When you are on a keto diet, you have to choose the second option because despite providing an almost equal amount of calories, the second meal is rich in fats and low in carbs compared to the first, high in carbs.

Lets go for a calorie break down to better understand why option 2 is keto-friendly while 1 is

Meal 1:

35%2%

Unsweetened Coffee And Tea

Coffee and tea are healthy, carb-free drinks.

They contain caffeine, which increases your metabolism and may help improve your physical performance, alertness, and mood .

Whats more, coffee and tea drinkers have been shown to have a significantly reduced risk of diabetes. In fact, those with the highest coffee intake have the lowest risk for developing diabetes .

Adding heavy cream to coffee or tea is fine but stay away from light coffee and tea lattes. These are typically made with nonfat milk and contain high carb flavorings.

Summary

Unsweetened coffee and tea contain no carbs and can help boost your metabolic rate, as well as physical and mental performance. They can also reduce your risk for diabetes.

How To Make Buttery Keto Cabbage In The Instant Pot

Cut the cabbage into bite-sized chunks. They don’t have to be particularly even, just not *too* big.

Add some chicken broth to the bowl of an Instant Pot, then add the cabbage. Finish with some butter.

Close the lid of the IP and set the vent to Seal. Select Pressure Cook High, with a time of 5 minutes. Allow the Instant Pot to come up to pressure.

When the 5 minutes cooking time is over, naturally release the pressure. Drain the cabbage through a colander, and season well with salt and black pepper. I actually finished my cabbage with some pink Himalayan sea salt one of the fabulous products that I received in last month’s Keto Box! It’s so fun to try new things!

Transfer to a serving dish or platter and add extra butter on top.
