The main goal of a ketogenic diet is to deprive the body of carbohydrates, which then forces the body to burn fat for energy. Restricting carbohydrates leads to fat getting broken down in the liver, a process that produces ketones to use for fuel when sugar, a byproduct of carbs, isnt as readily available to sue for energy. When the body is in this metabolic state, its called ketosis.

In a classic keto diet, about 70 percent to 80 percent of daily calories come from fats, 10 to 20 percent come from protein, and only about 5 to 10 percent come from carbohydrates, according to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Potential benefits of a ketogenic diet can include fewer food cravings, reduced appetite, and loss of fat instead of lean muscle mass as people shed excess pounds, according to Harvard. Risks of keto may include headaches, constipation or diarrhea, hunger, fatigue, and irritability, as well as nutrient deficiencies.

A low-calorie keto diet like the one used in the study has previously been associated with short-term weight loss and blood sugar reductions, less is known about the impact on testosterone and sex hormones, says Cignarelli. Research on the weight loss effects of keto in the long term are also lacking.

Studies Show Apples Promote Weight Loss

There are several well-done studies that show how women with excess weight who follow a low-calorie or weight-reduction diet will lose weight better when they eat apples. For instance, one study had women regularly eat apples, pears, or oat cookies. Each of these foods have a similar fiber, carb, and calorie content. After 12 weeks, the fruit groups lost 2.7 pounds , but the oat group showed no significant weight loss.

In another study, researchers gave 50 people three apples, three pears, or three oat cookies per day. After 10 weeks, the oat group saw no weight change, but those who ate apples lost two pounds. But thats not all. The apple group also reduced overall calorie intake by 25 calories per day, while the oat group ending up eating slightly more calories. Why? Because apples tend to be more filling and make you feel full, while cookies make you crave more sugar/carbs.

Theres more. A four-year study in 124,086 adults found that increased intake of fiber and antioxidant-rich fruits, such as apples, was associated with weight loss. Those who ate apples lost an average of 1.24 pounds.

While these weight loss numbers may not sound impressive, the researchers didnt require any other changes in diet. When you couple eating apples with a Keto Diet, youll see the weight fall off even faster.

Can You Eat An Intuitive Keto Diet

When you first start following a keto diet, overthinking is pretty much part of the package. For better or worse, keto newbies spend a lot of time learning what they can and cant eat, meticulously weighing and measuring food, and tracking everything that goes in their mouths.

Weighing, tracking, and restricting become understandably tedious after a while. I do know some people who are happy to maintain this level of dietary vigilance for months or even years, but most people fizzle out. Those who dont want to return to a more relaxed way of eating like Primal look for a compromise positiona keto diet without all the fuss.

This raises the question: is monitoring and careful control of your food intake simply part and parcel of keto, or is it possible to follow a keto diet intuitively?

Does Cooking Apples Reduce Their Carb Count

That certainly was a smattering of apple varieties we covered in the last section. Not all those types of apples are meant to be eaten straight off the tree. Some types are better for baking than they are eating raw.

Does baking or cooking an apple make it lower-carb?

While this is a good thought, it doesnt work in practice. Livestrong states that a raw apple thats 95 calories with four grams of fiber and 25 grams of carbs becomes 105 calories and 28 grams of carbs when baked.

The fiber increase to five grams, and you get one gram of protein. A raw apple usually contains no protein.

It doesnt matter whether you cut them, bake them, cook them, cube them, or sliver them. Apples are high-carb.

    Final Thoughts: Apples In Moderation

While its clear that apples should not make up the majority of your keto diet and shouldnt be a staple you eat every day, they can be incorporated in moderation.

Apples do provide other key health benefits, such as lowering cholesterol and reducing your risk of heart attacks and strokes.

If you want to eat apples this is possible on a keto diet, as long as you eat them in moderation and cut carbs in other areas.

However, if you can mix in other lower carb fruits, such as berries, this will help you stay on track with your keto diet and keep your body in ketosis.

If you have specific questions regarding your keto diet plan it is always recommended to consult with your doctor and receive professional advice.

While the keto diet can be a great path to weight loss, it is important to always make sure your body is still getting the nutrients it needs.

“In order to reach and maintain ketosis, carbohydrates need to be kept under a certain amount, typically under 5% of total calories or 50 grams per day, though some people may need to restrict carbs even more in order to reach ketosis,” said registered dietitian Jillian Kubala, MS, RD.

With that being said, she explained that the question isn’t really what types of fruits fit best with the keto diet, it’s simply how much fruit and other carbohydrate sources you can consume while staying in ketosis, and hitting your set macronutrient range when following a keto diet. This typically includes 75% fat, 20% protein, and only 5% carbohydrate, though there are different variations, she added.

Are Apples Keto Friendly Or Not

Obviously, eating 20 grams of carbs is a concern for anyone on Keto or any diet for that matter. So why do apples help you lose weight with such a huge carb load?

Its important to remember that when it comes to weight loss, it doesnt really matter if you count carbs or calories. Sometimes counting both is the best way to go. At least it is with apples.

Apples have several things going for them that your body just loves. First, they contain a lot of water. Nearly 86% of the apple is water. Second, they have a lot of fiber . Third, they dont carry a lot of calories. And fourth, apples have a relatively low glycemic index , which is a measure of how much blood sugar levels rise after eating. Apples have a GI of 38, compared to 72 for watermelon. So even though they have 20 grams of carbs, its a slow-burning carb that doesnt affect ketones as dramatically as other carb-rich foods.

That doesnt mean apples are always Keto friendly. Different people will respond differently. But not everyone should throw apples out the window when they eat Keto. Heres the evidence:

    Sugar Content In Fruit Explained

what fruits can you eat on Keto

Fruit is highly nutritious, but it’s also a source of carbohydrates. In fact, fruits are some of the most naturally carb rich, whole foods you can choose.

It is commonly dinged for its naturally high sugar content, but the sugars found in fruits are not quite the same as the refined and added sugars that we commonly demonize.

Like many other plant based foods, fruit is also loaded with fiber, a type of carbohydrate that is thought to not impact blood sugar levels in the same way.

Fiber is not easily digested and absorbed by the body – which can help push things through. It also helps draw out some unwanted compounds along the way, like cholesterol. For these reasons a high fiber diet is associated with better digestive and heart health . It is also part of the reason why fruit falls lower on the glycemic index scale .

Moreover, for your keto meal plan, this means you can enjoy fiber-rich foods like fruits and vegetables, and stay in ketosis. Even though fiber shows up on the nutrition facts label in total carb content, the grams of fiber are often subtracted to give you a net carb count for the food.

How To Make Room For An Apple On A Keto Diet

The first thing you should know is that we arent saying that you should eat an apple on a keto diet.

But you can make room for apples on keto diet on certain occasions.

    The first technique is

Follow the cyclic keto diet in which you follow the standard diet for 5 days follow 24-48 hours of carb refeed or targeted keto diet in which you can eat 20-30g extra carbs in a certain window. Remember, both diets are for people with a very active lifestyle.

    The second technique is

Get ready to take a massive amount of calories.

A keto diet contains more than 70% calories from fat and less than 10% calories from carbs. If you eat a medium-sized apple , it will provide you about 12 net carbs.

12g carbs will provide 48 calories and you need to eat 17-18 g fat to compensate for 12g net carbs.

If you want to eat an apple on a keto diet cut down on portion. But if you want a little more apple to your diet, also add more fat to your diet to compensate for these carbs. You can eat a half apple with 3-4 tablespoon of peanut butter or low carbs nuts or flaxseed oil etc.

You should avoid apples completely if you are on a keto diet for weight loss.
